About
There’s me in the middle, with trail brothers by my side on top of one of the greatest mountains in the thruhiking world. We came to be there after completing 2,160 miles on foot in five months and two weeks on The Appalachian Trail and earning the title of Thruhikers.
I am British born and raised with no real background in the outdoor world apart from the odd bit of family camping in the British countryside and previous to committing to hiking the Appalachian Trail no real hiking experience.
I have well and truly become hooked on the simple task of putting one foot in front of the other.
I now plan on thruhiking the Pacific Crest Trail and Continental Divide Trail and achieving the Triple Crown hoping this will give me enough experience to try perhaps some more exotic hiking trails from around the world.
before I thru-hiked in 97 I had done a bunch of backpacking but the longest I’d ever spent out was 3 nights. it’s not experience that you need to make it the distance, it’s a huge heart, a thick head, an insane tolerance for pain and the desire to take a life-altering journey. good luck and have a great time next year!

Thanks for my first reply AlisaG, I believe I have what it takes I’ve been ticking things off of a mental list, I have camped out in cold conditions down to about -4 with ice inside the tent, that was good fun, I’ve hiked with 30lb on my back 15 miles a day for a week that was good fun and did a charity hike over 5 days 26 – 30 miles a day without to much trouble. I know the AT is a whole different ball game but in the hiking and weather conditions department I feel I will cope, Its the psychological that concerns me a little. Being away from my wife, friends and family for 6 months thats big, I know I am determined for myself to get to Katahdin I can be quite stubborn when I set my mind to something like this, I will get there! But along the way I am sure that home will play on mind!
Thanks again for the reply

Hey man, looking forward to this blog once you get going! I finished it up this year, and will definitely be living vicariously through you and reminiscing about the experiences. If you have any questions about anything, ask any previous thru-hiker, they’ll be glad to help you out!

Congratulations on yout thru-hike, what to do next………? I know the feeling my brother and I hiked in 2010 (Wiggy & Sticks we are Brits too), didn’t know what to do for this first year, so decided to open a Hiker Lodge in Nantahala NC (Wayah Bald area, you hiked past us this year) met several Brits that came into the Lodge (Jolly was one of them) we are here http://www.aquonecabins.com/at.html. Well done to you a great achievement, Steve & Maggie

Cheers and congratulation to you to!
That name is familiar but I’m affraid I didn’t stay with you but heard of people that did and I believe they enjoyed. Still deciding what’s next…..veering towards setting up a smallholding believe it or not and living as sustainable as possible, other than hiking the AT this is the only other thing that stays fresh in my mind! Would love to hike others PCT, CDT South America, Himalayas but I’ve got a wife here back home and I did miss her terribly while away! We will see though perhaps 10 years down the road, or 2015 hahaha still undecided….. Take care mate
